Nursing is based on a caring relationship among the nurse, the patient and the family. An essential component of the relationship is trust, which the nurse fosters by consistently and competently caring for the patient’s basic and developmental needs, as well as by showing compassion and caring.

The goal is delivering excellent, safe, and patient- and family-centered care beyond the physical aspects to take the psychosocial, cultural and spiritual concerns of the patient/family into consideration as well.
