Our Pharmacy Team
Our team of pharmacy residents (pictured above) come from various parts of the country and have different research and career interests. Many on our team came to University of Louisville Hospital because it is an academic medical center, an optimal environment for learning. Teaching our residents are preceptors who are committed to training and guiding the next generation of pharmaceutical leaders.
Beyond participating in the day-to-day pharmacy functions at University of Louisville Hospital, our residents participate in a number of professional and social activities.
Resident Professional Activities
KSHP / JCAP
Residents participate in the Kentucky Society of Hospital-Systems Pharmacists and Jefferson County Academy of Pharmacists. Here, they provide clinical pearls, present research results in poster format and provide continuing education lectures.
Great Lakes Pharmacy Resident Conference (GLPRC)
The residents present their formal research results at GLPRC on Purdue University’s campus in April of each residency year.
Information from the GLPRC website:
The Great Lakes Pharmacy Resident Conference offers the opportunity for residents from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin to present their research projects to their peers and colleagues around the Great Lakes States. Each year, over 415 residents and approximately 250 preceptors meet to share the work that the residents have completed during their residency program. The conference offers an excellent opportunity for the current leaders within the profession to network with the future leaders. In addition, the corporate sponsors have the opportunity to network with residents and preceptors as well.
CE Series
Each resident is responsible for development and implementation of one hour of continuing education (CE). The CE program works to build the resident’s formal public speaking ability and is presented to the pharmacy department.
ASHP MCM
Residents are required to attend ASHP MCM. The residents are responsible for recruitment events and for presenting an abstract (poster) at the meeting of the research project.
Journal Club
The pharmacy staff attend a weekly pharmacy department education event called Journal Club where residents, preceptors and students present an educational topic or review a journal article.
Academic Activities
The residents participate in various academic activities throughout the year. Residents complete the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning through the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. Residents provide didactic lecture and are involved in pharmacy student education at the Sullivan University College of Pharmacy. In the latter half of the year, residents also precept pharmacy students from multiple colleges of pharmacy including Purdue, Butler and the above mentioned.
Resident Jobs
The residents have various jobs they are responsible for throughout their residency year. These include Pharmacy Journal Club Coordinator, Continuing Education Coordinator, Social Coordinator, Travel / Meeting Coordinator, Residency Interview Coordinator and Banquet Coordinator.
Resident Social Activities
Resident Cookout
The resident cookout is an annual welcome and farewell event for the incoming and graduating residency class. The cookout is a large event hosted by a preceptor at their home. A short film of the residency year created by the residency class is presented at the cookout.
“Downs after Dark”
Every July at the beginning of the residency year, the residents attend Downs after Dark, a horse racing event at the world famous Churchill Downs. This social event for residents is a great way for the residents to mingle and get to know one another and learn about the Kentucky tradition of horse racing.
Team Building Exercise “Ropes”
A team building exercise consisting of a high-ropes course is scheduled at the beginning of the residency year. This is an opportunity for the residents and residency program directors to problem-solve together and build trust.
Residency Banquet
At the conclusion of the residency year, the residents are presented their residency certificate at a formal banquet ceremony. Residents and preceptors reflect on their residency experience, share memorable moments and celebrate accomplishments.
Resident Mentorship Program
During the month of July, residents are paired with a mentor to guide them through their residency experience. The mentorship program is a rewarding part of the residency for both the resident and preceptor and facilitates the resident’s professional development.
